Athens, Transnational Focus Group 'Byproducts Management and Energy saving: The Future of Food Industry'

The European food industry produces at approximately 222 million tonnes of food waste per year. Re-use of agro-food by-products and their “transformation” in valuable energy sources using state of the art technologies inevitably introduces safety considerations.

By taking into account the amount of food waste produced by companies of the agrofood sector, Athens Chamber of Commerce & Industry, with the support of KiNNO Consultants LTD. organized the 1st Transnational Focus Group “Byproducts management and energy saving: the future of food industry”, held in Athens, Greece, on the 17th of September 2010 within the framework of the European project “TECH.FOOD - Solutions and interventions for the technological transfer and the innovation of the agro-food sector in South East regions”.

The main scope of the Transnational Focus Group was to bring together food industries, research institutions and entrepreneurs, from South Eastern European Countries, in order to exchange good examples of implementation and ideas on technologies that can be used, as well as to identify common challenges and ways to tackle them. The event provided a unique networking opportunity for participants including researchers, institutional stakeholders, representatives from agrofood production and processing enterprises, as well as, industrial engineering and quality experts from Greece, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Croatia & Serbia, matching “technical” and “producers” point of view.
