Athens, Open Day 'Functional Foods: New trends and innovation capabilities'

Consumer interest in the relationship between diet and health has increased the demand for information on functional foods. By taking into account the need for identification of innovative ways of production and methods of enrichment of food the Athens Chamber of Commerce & Industry, with the support of KiNNO Consultants LTD. organized an Open Day “Functional Foods: New trends and innovation capabilities”, which was held on the 11th of July 2011 within the framework of the European project “TECH.FOOD - Solutions and interventions for the technological transfer and the innovation of the agro-food sector in South East regions”.

The Open Day was consisted of Local Focus Groups’ meetings and technical seminars and was coordinated by Mr. Yiannis Geragotellis, Managing Director of KiNNO Consultants LTD., and Dr. Dimitra Xenaki, Head of Nutrition & Scientific Communication dept of Elais Unilever SA.

The participants had the opportunity to be informed about the definition of functional foods and their connection with health and the legislative framework in Greece and EU and the requirements to classify a food product as functional. Furthermore, an analytical presentation of the labeling obligations functional food products, as well as the communication and consumer information claims of functional foods. Finally, an open discussion was raised to explore the innovation opportunities in Greece and the presentation of successful cases, as well as case tools from failed ones.
